"Hondekop" - Dog Head 719 at Arnhem

Dutch Railways were, at the time I travelled, famous for the “Dog Head” units. There were two types: Mat ’64 which are suburban units in 2 or 4 car sets, some of which are still in service. During my earlier visits, the classic “Hondekop” (Dog Head) Mat ’54 units were still in service - just. These were formed of 2 and 4 car units with 2+2 Inter City style seating and many were being withdrawn in 1992. Those that remained were mostly used on “Sneltreins”. The suburban version of these units hit the headlines in both 1975 and 1977 when they were involved in two separate terrorist incidents whereby they were hijacked whilst working passenger trains.

20th November 1992.
